Harper’s ‘award-winning’ tight-lipped government and how the NDP would open up to journalists

<p><em>Journalists' continued frustration with a lack of access to information earned the Harper goverment the CAJ Code of Silence Award at Saturday night's gala. CBC issues redundancy notice to senior legal counsel Danny Henry

<p>Danny Henry, senior legal counsel at CBC and a noted advocate for press freedom in Canada, will be leaving his job with the broadcaster after being issued a redundancy notice, sources say.</p><p>Henry will leave the CBC after serving the broadcaster with legal counsel for 34 years.</p><p>“Danny has made a tremendous contribution to freedom of expression in this country,” <em>Toronto Star</em> lawyer Bert Bruser said in an email. “This is a very silly thing the CBC has done.”</p>

Data Journalism Handbook available online for free

<p> </p><p><a href="http://datajournalismhandbook.org/1.0/en/">The Data Journalism Handbook</a> is available online for free, and includes insight into how top news organizations use data to enhance their reporting.</p><p>With chapters about the use of data on the part of BBC, <em>The Guardian</em> and <em>The Chicago Tribune,</em> as well as 18 case studies and basic instructions (with links!) on how to scrape the web for data, the guide is thorough.</p><p>You can find the <a href="http://datajournalismhandbook.org/1.0/en/">handbook in its entirety online here</a>. </p>

UBC Indigenous Reporting class examines health and healing in Aboriginal communities

<p><a href="http://www.indigenouscommunities.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img alt="" class="imagecache-large inline-image" src="http://j-source.ca/sites/www.j-source.ca/files/imagecache/large/images/indigenous communities.PNG" title="" /></a></p><p>Duncan McCue and a class of University of British Columbia journalism graduate students have produced eight feature stories that seek to not further perpetuate stereotypes and show that there is more to Aboriginal communities than problem people and discouraging statistics—there are solutions within these communities, too.  </p>

National Newspaper Awards winners and runners-up
