CJF Black Journalism Fellowship Final Report

During my fellowship, I had the privilege of spending six months at CBC. This was my first choice of organization when applying for this fellowship, so I was very pleased to be placed there. I spent time with the national news team at News Network, the investigative team at the Fifth Estate and the arts and radio teams at Commotion and Q with Tom Power.

This fellowship gave me the opportunity to connect with journalists and executives across the industry that I would not have met otherwise. I was able to sharpen my skills as a writer, producer, and researcher, developing productive habits that will last throughout my career. One of my goals was to gain more experience in daily news, and I did so through the CJF Fellowship.

I produced over 10 segments across News Network, Commotion and Q with Tom Power. I was keen on having work that I could add to my portfolio, and what I have accomplished exceeded my expectations. The work that I am most proud of is my contribution to The Fifth Estate’s Missing Black Boys documentary. I had a personal connection to this story, with some of the children in the piece coming from the high school I graduated from. This experience was gratifying; it felt good to be a part of a story that brought about change in the communities I am a part of.
