The CRTC has approved Rogers Broadcasting Ltd.’s application for a license to operate a 24-hour news and information channel to serve Greater Toronto.
According to the CRTC decision, the “programming would consist of a mix of local news, traffic, weather, business, sports and entertainment information devoted exclusively to residents in the Greater Toronto and commuting areas.”
The new channel is called CITY News Toronto and will compete with other 24-hour channels such as CP24, CTV Newsnet and CBC’s Newsworld, which the public broadcaster recently announced will be overhauled.
The application was opposed by Pelmorex, owner of the Weather Network and by CTVglobemedia, owner of CP24.
