Building an online community, Economist-style

<p><em>The Economist</em> has nearly 1.2 million Twitter followers, and more than 800,000 Facebook fans. How do you build a community like that? Well, tweeting about what you had for lunch probably won't do it. New programs, faces at CTV News

<p>CTV News is premiering three programs and adding some new faces -- all this week.</p><p>Amanda Blitz, Rudyard Griffiths, Tasha Kheiriddin and Scott Reid will all join as anchors. The network, after all, will need the extra staff: it is moving toward a two-anchor format for much of the day, allowing, it says, for a more conversational approach to delivering the news.</p><p>The three programs, according to the release, include:</p><p><strong>Express</strong> -- A daytime, weekday program in the conversational format. One-minute news updates broadcast every 15 minutes.</p>

Want to know how the transphobic ad made it into the National Post?

<p>So does the <em>Post</em>. Advertising manager Enzo Loschiavo <a href="http://openfile.ca/toronto/blog/curator-blog/curated-news/2011/update-post-apologizes-still-investigating-how-transphobic-ad-go" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told <em>OpenFile</em></a> "I'll be honest, no one saw it." Meaning, none of the checks the <em>Post</em> runs before printing an ad caught the widely-panned Institute for Canadian Values ad.<br />

Dale Bass: What is Canada’s definition of a journalist?

<p>Although it can seem like it, not everybody is against the idea of creating a professional title for journalists.</p><p><em>Kamloops This Week</em> reporter and Canadian Association of Journalists chair Dale Bass has been in favour of professionalization for a long time, and she has written a thought-provoking column in her paper explaining why. <p>Après avoir analysé plusieurs numéros du <em>Winnipeg Sun</em>, le chercheur Pete Hudson de l'Université du Manitoba conclut que le quotidien du groupe Quebecor/Sun est un journal de propagande.
