The Globe and Mail has published an in-depth article on Postmedia's efforts to go digital dubbed "The glitch in Postmedia's digital switch."

Reporters Jacquie McNish and Susan Krashinsky centre on CEO Paul Godfrey, and the key challenge in his digital boost bid: "The trouble with this quest, however, is that Postmedia is trying to reinvent itself at a time when digital profits are still elusive and the company’s traditional newspaper business is sapping its financial strength."

Take the Calgary Herald, which Godfrey says is leading the charge. Postmedia has cut 750 since July 2010, and most of them, McNish and Krashinsky report, come from non-unionized newsrooms such as the Herald — forcing it to lead the so-called digital charge with fewer and fewer staff.

Perhas John Honderich, chairman of Postmedia's competitor Torstar Corp (and owner of the Toronto Star) put it best to McNish and Krashinsky. "It’s very easy to talk about digital,” he said. “We’ve all been struggling with that particular question. Putting meat on the bone, is another issue.”
