Freedom to report election results welcomed

<p>An odd Canadian law that prohibits reporting election results from the east before polls close in the west appears to be dead, and there don't seem to be many mourners.</p><p>Federal Minister of State for Democratic Reform Tim Uppal <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/MinTimUppal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced the change via Twitter</a> Friday. By using a social network tool to announce the ban would be revealed, Uppal highlighted one of the key reasons for the change: The law has become largely unenforceable.</p>

Same-sex marriage vs. Stephen Harper: False outrage and how the media got it wrong

<p><em>On Thursday, </em>The Globe and Mail<em> ran a <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/despite-legal-about-face-harper-has-no-intention-of-reopening-same-sex-marriage/article2299574/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">front-page story</a> that stated there had been a "reversal" of policy on the part of the government when it came to the legality of same-sex marriages in Canada. Outrage ensued. Commenters, social media and response columns all blasted Stephen Harper and his Conservative government for a move they considered to be steps backward for our society. </em></p>

So you want to be a ‘truth vigilante?’ Reaction to NYTimes public editor Arthur Brisbane’s column

<p>Today, Arthur Brisbane seemed to ask readers if they wanted <em>The New York Times</em> to change its practices and become truth-chasers. Wait, what?</p><p>Indeed. <a href="http://publiceditor.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/12/should-the-times-be-a-truth-vigilante/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The column</a> by the <em>Times</em> public editor seemed to assert that reporters have not been challenging facts that are told to them and asked readers if they wanted the paper to do more of this.</p>
