The Walrus Foundation is bringing its award-winning commentary to the screen in a new partnership with Toronto-based High Fidelity HDTV. Walrus TV launches today online at walrustv.ca and on television on High Fidelity’s ideas and culture channel, eqhd.
The foundation’s print publication, The Walrus, has won more National Magazine Awards than any other publication since its inception in 2003, and its stories are the inspiration for documentaries produced by eqhd.
“No other magazine in our category has their stories brought to the screen as documentaries,” Shelley Ambrose, executive director of The Walrus Foundation, said in a statement.
“We need to be where people are or where they’re going. We can’t sit here and pull people to be towards us,” Ambrose told The Globe and Mail.
Walrustv.ca launches with 27 documentaries and original pieces, ranging from eight to 15 minutes in length, and can also be found on eqhd. However, The Globe reports that eventually the documentaries will air exclusively on the channel for five to six weeks before moving online to Walrustv.ca.
