Tyee meets fundraising target of $100,000

The Tyee, a B.C.-based online magazine, has raised $100,000 during a three-week campaign to go national and hire an Ottawa-based reporter.

Initially, it appeared the magazine would not meet its target: on the night the campaign was to close, it was still short $25,000. But a last-minute push on social media raised the cash in the final five hours of the campaign.

“As you might imagine, all of us watching here at The Tyee were slack-jawed and astounded,” said editor-in-chief David Beers in a post on The Tyee. “Senior editor Robyn Smith summed up the feelings: ‘AHHH, this is outrageous! Who are these beautiful, beautiful giving people? My heart may explode.’”

The final tally and next steps for implementing the national campaign is expected in the coming weeks, Beers added.
