The Tyee embarks on its campaign to go national

The Tyee is gearing up to implement its plan to expand nationally after its crowdfunding campaign raised almost $102,000. The online magazine, based in Vancouver, will immediately start tapping into a pool of writers who committed to providing more conversation at the national level.

“It’s an affirmation for the kind of journalism we do, so it’s very exciting,” said editor-in-chief Dave Beers. “But I think what we’re seeing here is the second stage of crowdfunding for journalism.”

“It’s an affirmation for the kind of journalism we do, so it’s very exciting,” said editor-in-chief Dave Beers. “But I think what we’re seeing here is the second stage of crowdfunding for journalism.”

The next step, Beers said, is building all the website tags and pages to launch the national version of The Tyee. “Frankly, we’re just a bit exhausted after that big fundraising push and just taking a bit of a rest.”

Beers said the new content will appear under a new page called The Tyee National, but the homepage will still remain focused on British Columbia. “For now, we’re not creating a new website, but that might happen down the road,” Beers said. “We also want to start a national e-newsletter campaign … we’re just working out how often it will go out.”

The Tyee also indicated it wanted to hire an Ottawa-based reporter to cover federal issues, but Beers said they’re not ready to do that yet. “We’ve got some people who have indicated they’re interested, so I think we’re going to start assigning more content from Ottawa and then hire someone down the road,” he said. “There are lots of overhead costs with starting a venture like this, and yes, we’ve raised more than $100,000 … but that’s in monthly pledges.”
