Two Montreal AM stations, AM Info690 Montréal and AM940 Montreal’s Greatest Hits, were shut down on January 29, Corus Entertainment Inc. has announced.

A Canwest News Service article titled “Canada’s first radio station goes off the air” notes that “AM940 is a direct descendent of Canada’s first radio station, CFCF originally at the 600 dial on the AM band.”

In a news release about the closures, Corus explained that the stations just weren’t making any money.

“Despite the excellence and dedication of station employees, Info690 and AM940 are unprofitable. Corus Québec and its employees worked to grow audience and revenues on both these stations while operating them as efficiently as possible. It is clear that these two AM stations are not viable, particularly in the current economic climate.”

Ten jobs will be lost at the stations, including three journalists, two traffic reporters and three operations jobs at Info690 and one on-air and one technician at AM940.
