The Grid has been named one of the best-designed newspapers in the world by the Society for News Design in its 34th annual The Best of Newspaper Design Creative Contest.

The Torstar-owned weekly paper joins the following papers on SND’s World’s Best-Designed Newspaper list:

  • Dagens Nyheter, Stockholm, Sweden
  • Die Zeit, Hamburg, Germany
  • Politiken, Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Welt am Sonntag, Berlin, Germany

“The Grid feels ahead of its time when many newspapers lack freshness,” a slide depicting all five newspapers’ design strengths reads.

As for what the Society looks for when evaluating newspaper design: “A culture of careful editing of all content that puts the reader first — through stringent attention to detail,” the judges’ release states. “In the five publications we selected, details elevated them from their peers. In these papers, every page counts. These staffs perform an extra layer of editing to refine and strengthen the final product.”
