Sun Media agrees to meet with Ontario Press Council; discuss withdrawal

Contrary to Sun Media's claims, Ontario Press Council decisions are not politically correct and are only made after careful consideration, says Council chair Robert Elgie.

Elgie has issued an open letter to Sun Media in response to Sun Media's decision to quit the Council earlier this week, blaming the decision on the OPC's so-called politically correct bias and its alliance with the Sun's philosophically-oppositional competitors.

Nothing, he adds, could be further from the truth.

"In my experience," writes Elgie, "There has been no 'common cause' exhibited by either public or professional members adverse to the views of the Sun's representatives or representatives from other news organizations."

Glenn Garnett, Sun Media's VP of editorial, has agreed to meet with Elgie to discuss the situation, but has given no clue as to whether he will change his mind.

Elgie, for one, hopes Sun will consider its decision.
