Student journalists at the University of Oregon’s newspaper the Oregon Daily Emerald are expected to resume work on Monday after going on strike last week over editorial independence.
The dispute began when the Board of Directors overseeing the paper wanted
to hire a consultant, Steve Smith, would receive $80,000 a year to
revamp the paper and also teach at the journalism school.
Students complained that Smith’s presence would affect their independence from the university.
Both students and the board agree the Emerald is in financial straits, and that a greater multimedia presence is necessary for the paper to survive.
