Atlantic Journalism Awards
The Atlantic Journalism Awards offer several student-specific and school-specific awards.

CAB Scholarships
Every
year, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) offers, in
collaboration with its members, scholarships to six talented Canadian
broadcasting and communications students.

CAJ/CNW Student Award of Excellence in Journalism
The
CAJ gives an award each year to the student with the top piece of
journalism is any medium. The award is open to students in accredited
degree/diploma program offered by a Canadian university or college. The
winner receives $1000.

CBC Joan Donaldson Newsworld Scholarship
After
successfully passing a rigorous interview process, up to eight students
are selected from the nine participating universities. Each Donaldson
Scholar receives a cash award of $2,000.00, training and an intensive
four-month paid internship at one or more locations within CBC
Newsworld.

CCNA Campus Newspaper Awards
As
a part of its Better Newspapers Competition, the Canadian Community
Newspaper Association gives out a handful of awards every year to the
campus press. They are: outstanding campus newspaper, best campus news
story, best campus feature sotry, and best campus photography.

Edward Goff Penny Memorial Prizes for Young Canadian Journalists
The
Edward Goff Penny Memorial Prizes for Young Canadian Journalists were
established in 1991 at the bequest of the estate of the late Arthur G.
Penny, grandson of Edward Goff Penny. The first awards were presented
in 1992. The winners are in keeping with the terms of the
bequest–between the ages 20 and 25 and from each of two circulation
categories: under 25,000 and over 25,000. Prize money is $1,500 for
each category.

Fraser MacDougall Journalism Prize
The
Fraser MacDougall Journalism Awards are for Ontario students only. The
competition is sponsored by the Ontario Press Council.  The annual
competition, open to journalism students at Ontario universities and
community colleges, is named for a former Ottawa bureau chief of The
Canadian Press and the first executive secretary of the sponsoring
press council.  The call for submissions is usually available in Spring
of each year.  They accept entries of essays and articles covering
freedom of speech and freedom of the press.  The first prize receives
$1000, the second prize receives $500, and the third prize receives

Herb Lampert student writing award (science)
The
Herb Lampert Student Writing Award is open to any student science
writer who has a science article published in a student or other
newspaper or magazine, or aired on a radio or TV station in Canada. The
deadline is usually mid-March.

IDRC Awards for International Development Journalism
The
IRDC awards are granted to full-time graduate students who are
currently enrolled in, or are graduates from the preceding academic
year of a Master of Arts in Journalism program, or Graduate Diploma in
Journalism, and are based on good academic achievement.  The recipient
of the award spends approximately 4-10 months in a developing country
to enhance his/her knowledge of international development and
international reporting issues.  The award of up to $20,000 covers
living, research, equipment and travel expenses, while the awardee
undertakes field research in the developing country. The five
universities that grant these awards are: Carleton, Concordia, Western,
Laval and UBC.

Investigative Reporting (IRE) Student Award
Outstanding
investigative reporting by a student in a college-affiliated newspaper,
magazine or specialty publication (or while serving a print
internship), or broadcast work that has been publicly reviewed,
screened or aired. This award comes with an IRE Certificate of
Recognition and a $250 cash scholarship for Outstanding Investigative
Reporting.

Jack Webster Awards (BC Students only)
Seven
$2,000 awards are available that will be paid towards tuition. The
awards are open to students who are permanent residents of British
Columbia and who are pursuing full time journalism studies in a British
Columbia post-secondary journalism program and who show a demonstrated
interest in journalism.

The Johnnies
The
John H. McDonald Foundation, in conjunction with Canadian University
Press, offers various awards to student writers, photographers, and
designers every year. The awards are open to any students whose work
has been published in a student publication at post-secondary
institutions in Canada. One winner from each category will be awarded
$500. There will be two honourable mentions in each category. Winners
are announced at the CUP National Conference during the JHM Gala.

Journalism Scholarship for Native Canadians
The
Gil Purcell Memorial Journalism Scholarship for Native Canadians is
offered annually by the Canadian Press. The $4,000 scholarship was
established in 1990. Its purpose is to encourage aboriginal Canadians
to enter the field of journalism through study at a postsecondary
institution. It is in memory of Gillis Purcell, who from 1945 to 1969
was general manager of The Canadian Press, the national news agency.

Keith Gilmore Foundation Scholarships
The
Keith Gilmour Foundation, an agricultural journalism foundation, offers
10 scholarships each year to students who are planning to go into
agriculture or agriculture journalism. The program continues to grow
and support young achievers in the agricultural community.

Manitoba Co-operator Scholarship
The
Manitoba Co-operator Scholarship is open to Manitoba residents enrolled
full-time or part-time in a post-secondary program in journalism,
communications or broadcasting anywhere in Canada. They give out a
$1,000 scholarship annually to the best essay on a topic of their
choice.

Michele Landsberg Award
The
Michele Landsberg Award recognizes young women who are outstanding
feminists in the area of media or activism, and who are attending a
formal learning institution. The Canadian Women’s Foundation initiated
the award to honour the tremendous impact that Michele has had as an
advocate and role model for all women in Canada, and to celebrate the
next generation of women who are working toward the goal of social
equality for women and girls.

Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism
Established in the memory of award-winning Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang, the first Canadian reporter to be killed in Afghanistan since the war began. The fellowship will offer a $10,000 prize to a recent Canadian university graduate (degree can be from any discipline), which will go to fund a news project significant to a Canadian audience. In addition to this, the winner will receive a one-year, paid internship with Canwest, including six months at the Calgary Herald and six months at Canwest News Service in Ottawa. National Magazine Award for Best Student Writer
The National Magazine Award for Best Student Writer is awarded each year to a full-time student whose non-fiction or journalistic work in a Canadian consumer magazine or university/college magazine shows the highest degree of craft and promise. The winner receives a $1,000 prize and is awarded a certificate on stage at the gala in June.

National Press Club of Canada Scholarships
In
2009, the National Press Club of Canada (NPC) handed out its first
series of scholarships. The scholarships available are: the Spencer
Moore Scholarship, valued at $3,000 per year for three years, the
Barbara Frum Scholarship valued at $2,000 per year for up to three
years and the National Press Club of Canada Foundation Scholarship of
$1,000 per year for up to three years. The competition is open to
journalism students attending Canadian colleges and universities.

Online Journalism Awards
The
online journalism awards have a student category. The category honours
excellence in digital journalism by a student or team reporting on a
single story or issue. The work must have appeared originally in a
student- or school-based Web site and have been created by full-time
student(s) (at the time of publication). Unpublished entries and those
produced with professional assistance do not qualify.

RTNDA Scholarships
The Association of Electronic Journalists offers several scholarships, ranging from $2000 to $2500. There are awards aimed at students in specific years as well as general prizes including The Canadian Press / Eric Murray Scholarship for Aboriginal Persons and Members of a Visible Minority, the CBC / Barbara Frum Scholarship for Interviewing, the BNN / Jim O’Connell Scholarship, the 660 News Diversity Scholarship and the RTNDA George Clark Scholarship for the Overall Winning Entry, which will be awarded to the best overall entry from the other categories.

Wanda Jamrozik Prize for journalism thesis
The
Wanda Jamrozik Prize is awarded by the Australian Centre for
Independent Journalism to the best honours or graduate thesis/project
in the areas of Journalism, Media Studies or a related field in Social
Science and the Humanities, which exemplifies human values in the
media, especially in relation to ethnic, racial and multicultural
issues, both in Australia and internationally. The cash prize is
determined by the Faculty based on the interest earned by the Trust in
the preceding year. It is usually not less than $1,000.

Young Cuts Awards
Young Cuts recognizes some of the top filmmakers under 25 in Canada in August of each year.
