Sports journalist Richard Garneau died Sunday morning at Montreal’s Royal Victoria Hospital at the age of 82.

While Garneau was known for calling the Montreal Canadiens games on L’soiree du hockey, he also covered 23 Olympic Games, and according to The Globe’s obituary, his true passion was in these non-professional sports. As Sophie Cousineau writes:

On the plane to London last summer, Mr. Garneau told his friend Mr. Aubut that he was intent on making the trip to Sochi, Russia, and to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the next two Olympic Games will be held. For this tireless reporter, it was unimaginable to watch the Games on television.
