Some journalists and news organizations took government funding to produce work: is that a problem?

<p><em>*Update:</em> <em>The news department of Global Television never took CIDA cash, according to senior vice president Troy Reeb. <br /><br />In response to the original J-Source article, Reeb says "it would clearly be a violation of our principles and practices to do that."<br /><br />J-Source originally reported that Global received CIDA cash to finance programming. According to a government database, over $150,000 went to documentaries that would later air on Global Television.<br />

How drones have been used in journalism and the potential for future use

<p><em>In April of 2013, Alexandra Gibb defended a master’s thesis for the Graduate School of Journalism at UBC on a particularly timely topic — the use of drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, for journalistic purposes. Gibb, currently a CBC News Vancouver Scholar, considers defence and security reporting her specialty, and came to the topic of drone journalism through her longstanding interest in the use of drones for defence purposes.

Did journalists violate rights of B.C. terror suspects?

<p>Allegations that two Canadian citizens planned to explode homemade devices similar to the kind used in the <a href="http://www.canada.com/news/RCMP+makes+arrests+plot+bomb+legislature/8605777/story.html">Boston marathon bombing</a> during Canada Day celebrations at the B.C. legislature in Victoria is shocking.  </p><p>The horror of what might have happened to thousands of revelers who came to celebrate what makes this country great was mitigated only by news that police had thwarted the plot and detained two suspects.</p>

Opinion: Why Canadian media should not shy away from religion reporting

<p><strong>By Vanessa Santilli</strong></p><p>Regardless of your religious affiliation — or whether you're a believer or not — it's hard to deny that many Canadians believe in something greater than themselves.</p><p>According to recent data from the 2011 National Household Survey, 76 per cent of Canadians still identify with a religion. But the number of beat reporters covering religion for secular publications has declined over the years, says Joyce Smith, graduate program director for the Ryerson School of Journalism.</p>
