The editor famous for publishing the Muhammad cartoons has been awarded the Danish Free Press Society’s inaugural Sappho prize for excellence combined with courage and a refusal to compromise. The cartoons, published in the Jyllands-Posten in September 2005, ignited a world-wide debate over freedom of the press due to their derogatory portrayal of Muslims.
