Memo: Stuart Thompson leaves Globe for WSJ

We’re sad to announce that Stuart Thompson will be leaving us to join The Wall Street Journal as a senior interactive graphics editor in New York.

We’re sad to announce that Stuart Thompson will be leaving us to join The Wall Street Journal as a senior interactive graphics editor in New York.

In the three years since Stuart joined The Globe as a summer web editor, he has become one of the newsroom’s not-so-secret weapons. As a multimedia editor, then a member of the mobile team, he has been a pioneer in The Globe’s data journalism, visualization and interactive efforts and collaborated with reporters and editors across the paper to bring our stories to digital life. If you’ve ever approached him for help, you know that he rarely says no and often comes up with something better than you originally envisioned. His work has garnered recognition from the Society for News Design Awards, the Data Journalism Awards and the Canadian Online Publishing Awards.

Thankfully, we’ll continue to reap the benefits of Stuart’s contributions even after he leaves the building: Over the past few months, Stuart has worked with Matt Frehner to develop a series of tools and templates that allow us to tell stories in better ways every day – from the new long-form features template, to the WordPress blog that we used for Sochi, to tools for image lists, explainers and a host of other cool things.

Stuart’s last day is May 30. We wish him the best on his new opportunity.
