Tonight marks the 15th annual Canadian Journalism Foundation awards gala and the convergence of some of the biggest names and brightest up-and-comers in Canadian journalism.
Legendary ABC Nightline anchor Ted Koppel will present a posthumous honourary tribute to Peter Jennings, who passed away in 2005. Northern News Services’ Jack Sigavaldson will be presented with the CJF Lifetime Achievement Award. Tamara Baluja, the Greg Clark Award winner who will spend a week doing research in a First Nations school in B.C., will receive her award as well.
The J-Source Newsperson of the Year Award, which OpenFile CEO Wilf Dinnick won in January, will also be presented to him tonight. (J-Source is a project of the CJF in partnership with Canadian journalism schools.)
And finally, the big awards of the evening: The CJF Excellence in Journalism Award in both large and small media will be handed out. The large-media finalists are: The Canadian Press, The Current – CBC Radio One, Huffington Post Canada, Toronto Star, Winnipeg Free Press.
We’ll be there rubbing shoulders with dozens of other great journalists – and associate editor Belinda Alzner will liveblogg the whole thing. (Okay, mostly just the awards part – don’t worry, gala-goers, any wine-induced remarks will stay off-the-record.) You can follow along with us below, or on Twitter with the hashtag #cjfgala.
