Description:

J-Source.ca is a source for news, research and resources related to excellence in Canadian journalism, a place for commentary and discussion on the state and standards of Canadian journalism, an expanding database of award-winning journalism and links to other organizations that recognize and support excellence in journalism. The website’s target audiences include: practising journalists, journalism and media scholars (teachers, researchers, and students) and members of the public with an interest in journalism. J-Source.ca is a project of the Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) in collaboration with journalism schools and organizations across Canada.

The Associate Editor will manage content for J-Source.ca. This is a one-year contract position, based in Toronto. The successful applicant will be a journalist who is energetic, thoughtful, self-motivated, collaborative and enthusiastic about the project’s goals.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief and the Executive Director, in support of the masthead team members, and in collaboration with the CJF program manager, the Associate Editor will perform the following tasks:

  • On a daily basis, seek, secure and edit relevant news items, resources and other content for the site at large, with a particular emphasis on the home page and weekly newsletter;
  • Seek opportunities for original content, assign it (where required) on section editors’ behalf, and work with creators and editors to shape and post the content;
  • Post daily news and other updates to ensure timeliness of content;
  • Copyedit all content ensuring consistency, accuracy, and fairness (including approaching people named to invite comment);
  • Find and post multimedia content to support text;
  • Find and post external links to available content;
  • Periodically inform individuals and select groups within target audiences of availability of new J-Source content relevant to their interests and needs;
  • Communicate with editors regularly to make sure they’re providing content and provide support;
  • Manage and expand the database of award-winning journalism;
  • Suggest and implement ways to grow and improve the site in terms of content, interactivity and navigability;
  • Remain available to editors by phone and email during normal business hours.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent research, writing, proofreading and editing skills in English;
  • University degree;
  • Journalism experience;
  • Close attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner with internal and external contacts;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Strong inter-personal skills;
  • Demonstrated administrative capabilities and good organizational skills;
  • Familiarity with web environment;
  • Familiarity with content management systems is an asset;
  • Proficiency in French is an asset.
