The Canadian Journalism Project is seeking a part-time business manager based at the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University, in Ottawa, to work with the J-Source and ProjetJ editorial teams in Toronto (Ryerson) and Quebec City (Laval) in managing the business operations of J-Source and ProjetJ.

Responsibilities

The business manager will be responsible for general administration of both ProjetJ and J-Source and will have lead responsibility for managing the site redesign and creation of new revenue streams for the publications. Specifically, the business manager will:

• Provide administrative support to the publisher, steering committee and board of directors.
• Set up financial systems with the university to ensure the smooth flow of invoices and payments for all aspects of J-Source and ProjetJ other than the salary of the associate editor and IT services provided by Ryerson University.
• Work with the administration at Carleton University to ensure that accounting systems are consistent with university protocols.
• Research sponsorship/advertising opportunities to determine the best models for J-Source and ProjetJ and make recommendations about site design and the use of agencies and/or commissioned sales staff.
• Post non-editorial material to the J-Source and ProjetJ sites including advertisements, updates to the masthead, etc.
• Support editorial committee meetings including scheduling, creating agendas, taking minutes and maintaining records.
• Work with the publisher, editorial personnel and the CJP board of directors to develop specifications for a site redesign that will grow traffic and audience engagement and facilitate the creation of new revenue streams. 
• Work with the publisher to establish performance goals for audience engagement on the redesigned site, approve new products and services, including marketing, pricing and performance goals, and help develop the site redesign. 
• Research subscription potential, make relevant recommendations for site redesign, price points and markets. Take primary responsibility for selling subscriptions. 
• Research the viability of a job board and make relevant recommendations for site redesign, price points and markets, with primary responsibility for sales and management of the job board. 
• Work with the publisher and governance board and a lawyer to oversee the incorporation of the Canadian Journalism Project as a non-profit organization and the creation of a new board of directors. 
• Assume responsibility for overseeing site analytics and statistics.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants should possess:

• Demonstrated financial management skills including relevant computer skills;
• Strong communication skills and an ability to work independently;
• Experience in online publishing with a particular focus on understanding site design and analytics;
• Monitoring and reporting on analytics/other metrics, and maintaining domain names and other registrations, and marketing and administrative web-based tasks; 
• Knowledge and experience in marketing and advertising;
• Experience and success in working with a small team based in multiple locations; 
• A strong interest in innovation and in contributing to all aspects of the operations of J-Source and ProjetJ; and
• Ability to operate in both English and French.

Compensation

Pay commensurate with experience and expectation of 20 hours of work per week with the potential for commission on sales of subscriptions, advertising and fundraising.
