Michael Cooke announced the appointment of Irene Gentle as business editor of the Toronto Star and the star.com in a staff memo last week.
Gentle starts June 20. She comes to the Star from the Hamilton Spectator, where she is currently the news editor. She has also worked as city editor, business editor, and Saturday editor in her six years at the Spec.
“Irene has demonstrated creativity, drive, teamwork and a commitment to excellence. She has had a key role in the paper’s considerable recent accomplishments in daily news and enterprise journalism, reflected in its frequent Michener, NNA and ONA honours,” said Cooke in the memo.
“As part of the management team, she has been involved in development of the paper’s evolving digital strategy and put together training sessions on social media and multi-media … Her entrepreneurship, creativity and leadership will be of great value as we continue toward a digital future while maintaining our commitment to excellence in print.”
