Global News is adding two 30-minute local newscasts for Halifax and New Brunswick audiences starting Monday April 15.

The one-hour Global Maritimes News Final show will be replaced by local programming from Global Halifax and Global News Brunswick stations and will feature hyperlocal weather and news tailored to each province.

In a statement released Thursday, Shaw Media said “this separation of Global Maritimes into Global Halifax and Global New Brunswick will move both stations away from being an amalgamated regional news source to focusing more on local stories in both areas.”  The two stations will share newsgathering and reporting resources, including the use of senior anchor Ron Kronstein and meteorologist Trevor Adams in both markets.

Shelley Steves will be joining the Global New Brunswick roster as a senior correspondent based in Moncton. Prior to joining Global, Steeves was a reporter and producer for CBC News Moncton as well as the Atlantic Bureau Chief for the Weather Network. A web producer for the New Brunswick station will also be hired soon, said Shaw Media publicist Nick Poirier.

Earlier this year, Global News cofirmed the purchase of the building that was home to Palooka’s Gym on Gottingen St. in Halifax’s north end. It will be moving its television studios there in September from its current location at Burnside Park in Dartmouth.
