According to the Chronicle Herald, Global News has purchased the building that was home to Palooka’s Gym on Gottingen St. in Halifax’s north end, and will be moving its television studios there in September from its current location at Burnside Park in Dartmouth.

Troy Reeb, vice-president of Global News, told the Herald that the renovations that will turn the building from gym to studio will be finished by September — just in time for the launch of a new morning news show.

Reeb said the move isn’t about money, but rather about the relationship between journalism and community. He says that the move from Dartmouth to the Halifax peninsula will not only be good for the station, but for Gottingen Street — an area in the city that is looking for revitalization.

This photo from the Herald’s archives shows the street in its “heyday” in 1962. But last year, Metro Halifax reported that nearly half of those surveyed said they avoided Gottingen St./Uniacke Square area because of perceived safety concerns.
