Purves started working at the Chronicle Herald in 1974 in the Truro bureau. She was appointed the managing editor at The Mail-Star, a now defunct afternoon edition of the Chronicle Herald, in 1988. Three years later, she was named the first female top editor at the Chronicle Herald and the Mail-Star, according to the article.
She left the journalism industry to join the Nova Scotia legislature in 1999 and served until 2003, when she lost in an election.
She was appointed he editor of the Halifax Daily News, but left less than a year later to return to politics, the Chronicle-Herald reported. In 2006, Purves was named the Irving Chair in Journalism at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. She also served on the board of the governors of the National Newspaper Awards.
