CBC leads so far with nine nominations—if radio, television and online are grouped together—one of which was for publishing the work of student journalists from University of Western in the Student Award of Excellence category. Toronto Star had three nominations, including two in the photojournalism category for staff photographers Rick Madonik and Steve Russell.

Only one piece of student reporting from a journalism school was nominated in a category outside of the Student Award of Excellence, that being for the investigative project (902)9-1-1, which was nominated in the Computer-Assisted Reporting category. The piece was the result of an investigation undertaken by students and led by instructor (and J-Source contributing editor) Fred Vallance-Jones at the University of King’s College in Halifax, NS and published in Halifax alt-weekly The Coast
