China frees imprisoned journalist

After intense lobbying from activists and politicians, Chinese authorities have released a Singapore newspaper reporter accused of spying on China for Taiwan. The reporter had been sentenced to five years in jail in 2005 in a high-profile case that underscored the country’s views on the media and dissent. China has since vowed to foster a more open media environment leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
