Ruling relaxes libel rules for political bloggers

<p>An Ontario judge has tossed a libel action against three political bloggers, arguing that web-based political discussions are forums for “the parry and thrust” of vigorous debate and participants whose reputations have been attacked should fight back with words, not legal action.</p>

Western CanWest Journalism Fellows announced

<p>Two new Canwest Journalism Fellows have been announced for the University of Western Ontario's journalism graduate program 2011/12 school year.<br /><br />Former CBC National radio news and current affairs senior producer Thomas Rose will join the school first. Rose's academic research centres on journalism and human rights, including the history of media development projects in West Africa. He will teach the course "Journalism, human rights, and international development" for the Masters program.<br />

Former Canadian journo named CEO of second-largest U.S. media chain

<p>Veteran journalist John Paton has been named CEO of MediaNews Group, the second largest U.S. media news chain and publisher of the <em>Denver Post</em>, <em>Salt Lake Tribune</em>, and others.</p><p>Paton is the former CEO of Canoe Inc, and former VP of Sun Media. He's also former publisher of the <em>London Free Press</em> and the <em>Ottawa Sun</em>. He is currently a director at Postmedia. He co-founded Spanish-language publication ImpreMedia in 2003.</p>

CP photogs share memories of 9/11 coverage

<p>Scores of media travelled to Manhattan once news of the 9/11 attacks hit, but many Canadian media were denied access into the city. CP photojournalists Ryan Remiorz and Paul Chiasson made it through -- after a police officer at the first checkpoint unthinkingly laid a press credential on Chiasson's larger, French "MEDIAS" press card, covering the IA and causing them to later be mistaken as medics. Together they recount their experiences in a short clip posted on <em>The Globe and Mail</em>.
