How to be a journalist in 2011

<p>Multimedia journalist Lauren Rae Orsini, 24, won a contest at Forbes.com this summer and wrote a <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/susannahbreslin/2011/06/28/how-to-be-a-journalist-in-2011/">guest post</a> for the site titled "How to Be a Journalist in 2011." She recounts her experiences working at an anime convention in Washington, D.C., at which she dressed in costumes to better relate to her subjects.</p><p>Orsini advises young journalists to think outside the box and make up their own rules.  </p>

CRTC officially revokes CKXT licence ending free access to Sun News

<p>The <a href="http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2011/2011-719.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CRTC has officially approved</a> TVA Group’s request to revoke the broadcasting licence for CKXT-TV and its related transmitters. The issue first surfaced in May, <a href="http://j-source.ca/article/bell-tv-pulls-sun-news-network" target="_blank" rel="noopener">when some cable providers complained</a> the channel’s parent company, Quebecor, was using the station to air Sun News programming over the “free” airwaves -- in addition to its specialty cable service, which requires a fee.

First years and the rush to publish

<p>When one lecturer’s department at East Tennessee State University introduced a content-management system that put j-students’ first-ever stories in the public spotlight, the fallout was, <a href="http://aejmc.net/spig/2011/reforming-j101-what-i-learned-from-the-rush-to-publish-2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">as she puts it</a>, “enough to make me tear up my syllabus.”</p><p>One student lost his job. Another earned an F when it was discovered he had someone else do the story. Sources that were promised anonymity, it was revealed, were quoted. Photo credits were missing.</p>
