J-Links for Sept 20: Bruce Arthur named best sports writer; CBSC decision on Haitian slur; New BBC boss lays out plan

Past recipients of the award, which has been given out since 2000, include Randy Starkman, Cam Cole and Stephen Brunt.</p>

Winnipeg Free Press cuts seven from newsroom staff

<p><em>The Winnipeg Free Press</em> laid off seven staff members Tuesday, including five reporters, one paginator and one manager.</p><p>The cut focused solely on the newsroom, and leaves the <em>Free Press</em> with 89 people in the department. Reporters who were let go were the <em>Free Press’ </em>only music reporter, two news reporters, an arts and culture reporter and a sports reporter. The manager who was let go was the deputy editor of online services.</p>

UPDATED! 2013 James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship seeking applications by Dec 3

<p> </p><p>When Jim Travers passed away in March 2011, he left behind a legacy that friends and colleagues wanted to honour. They did so by creating the James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship, which is a $25,000 award administered by Carleton University.</p><p>The fellowship will fund a significant foreign reporting project, and applications are now open for the second annual award.</p>

Katie DeRosa’s Travers Fellowship reporting progress

<p>Earlier this year, Victoria <em>Times Colonist</em> reporter Katie DeRosa was named the <a href="http://j-source.ca/article/katie-derosa-named-first-james-travers-fellowship-recipient">inaugural Travers Fellowship recipient</a>. She is currently in Australia, working on her fellowship-funded project, which is an investigation into the impact of Canada’s proposed tougher human smuggling laws on refugee claimants.</p><p>Here’s an update from Katie via Carleton's YouTube channel on the progress of her project:</p>

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford challenges media to a debate, The Grid’s senior editor obliges

<p>Mayor Rob Ford <a href="http://www.newstalk1010.com/Episodes.aspx?PID=2443">returned to his Newstalk1010 radio show</a> with brother Councillor Doug Ford after their summer hiatus on Sunday, challenging reporters to a debate in light of the media's coverage of them over the last week. And within 24 hours, Edward Keenan, The Grid’s senior editor, had taken him up on it.</p>

Forum Freelance Fund names 2012 bursary winners
