Five take buyouts at Montreal’s The Gazette; executive editor Raymond Brassard retires

<p>Five veteran staffers at Montreal’s <em>The Gazette</em> have taken buyouts and will depart the newspaper as of Sept. 1.</p><p>Media blogger and <em>Gazette</em> copy editor Steve Faguy <a href="https://twitter.com/fagstein" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a> that sports columnist Stephanie Myles, editorial writer and columnist Janet Bagnall, city columnist Henry Aubin, entertainment reporter Bernard Perusse and journalist Dave Bist are leaving.</p>

Toronto Star reduces page width by 5 per cent

<p>In a <a href="http://j-source.ca/article/memo-toronto-star-reduces-page-size">memo</a> to staff, <em>Toronto Star</em> publisher John Cruickshank said the newspaper will reduce the width of its printed page by 5 per cent starting Sept. 16.</p><p>Cruickshank said the page reduction is in line with industry trends – <em>The Globe and Mail</em> has already changed its page size and the <em>National Post</em> will follow suit in the fall – and will lead to “significant cost savings.”</p>

The Chronicle Herald launches paywall
