2007 Editors Choice Awards

(Press Release)

TORONTO, June 14 – The Canadian Society of Magazine Editors has announced the winners of the 2007 Editors’ Choice Awards. The awards ceremony took place last night at a gala dinner in downtown Toronto.

Canadian Gardening, The Hockey News, and Spacing took home the title of Magazine of the Year at this year’s Editor’s Choice Awards in the categories of large-, medium-, and small-circulation, respectively. In a new category for trade magazines, the award went to Far North Oil and Gas.

In addition, editors Aldona Satterthwaite of Canadian Gardening, and Matt Blackett of Spacing were chosen as Editors of the Year. The judges noted that Satterthwaite puts together a magazine that is warm, beautifully art directed and a very comfortable read for those who love this hobby. They commented that Spacing’s Blackett publishes a magazine that is a compelling advocate for the importance of public space, with intelligent, relevant, and often surprising packages.

The Best Front-of-Book award went to Profit; and Best Display Writing to Maisonneuve.

“This year’s competition was tougher than ever,” says Douglas Thomson, president of the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors. “In fact the competition was so stiff this year that the judging panel asked that we award two Editor of the Year awards. We also added a Trade category this year which opened up the competition to a whole new category of great magazines. There’s a tremendously high standard of excellence upheld by
magazine editors in this country.”
