Queen’s Journal claims student government cut advertising after unflattering editorial

<p><strong>By Mary-Katherine Boss, Student Lounge Editor</strong></p><p>In early September, Queen's University’s student government, the Alma Mater Society (AMS), pulled its advertising from the campus’s student newspaper, <em>The Queen’s Journal. </em>While the AMS said the decision was purely financial, <em>Journal</em> editors see it as a result of its unflattering coverage of the society.</p>

Andrew Cash’s urban worker strategy bill tackles unpaid internships

<p><strong>By Justin Ling</strong></p><p>As freelancing and unpaid internships become the norm in today’s bleak media landscape, Andrew Cash has a tiny ray of light. In October, the NDP MP for Davenport tabled a private member’s bill in the House of Commons that calls on the government to establish a legal framework for the labour laws that govern what has become the new normal in the Canadian job market: precarious employment. Cash calls his proposal the <a href="http://petition.ndp.ca/urban-workers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Urban Workers Strategy</a>.</p>

New CUP/CWA Canada partnership takes “harm reduction” approach to internships

<p><strong>By Katherine Lapointe</strong></p><p>$1.64 an hour. That’s effectively the <a href="http://www.ellecanada.com/elle-canada-print-editorial-internships/a/47166" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hourly rate</a> for editorial interns at TC Media’s <em>ELLE Canada</em> magazine on a four-month internship. And the interns who receive a $750 stipend upon completion of their internship are luckier than the many young journalists who are not being paid at all for their work. </p>
