Toronto Mayor Rob Ford challenges media to a debate, The Grid’s senior editor obliges

<p>Mayor Rob Ford <a href="http://www.newstalk1010.com/Episodes.aspx?PID=2443">returned to his Newstalk1010 radio show</a> with brother Councillor Doug Ford after their summer hiatus on Sunday, challenging reporters to a debate in light of the media's coverage of them over the last week. And within 24 hours, Edward Keenan, The Grid’s senior editor, had taken him up on it.</p>

Forum Freelance Fund names 2012 bursary winners

CIC-Walrus International long-form competition accepting entries

<p> </p><p>The Canadian International Council and <em>The Walrus</em> have teamed up to present an internationally-focused long-form competition open to Canadians and residents of Canada involved in international research.</p><p>Entrants will pitch a piece ranging between 5,000 to 7,500 words on a “salient issue in international political affairs within Canada and worldwide.” The winner of the competition will work with a <em>Walrus</em> editor on his or her piece and will receive a $7,500 commission.</p>

<p> </p><p><strong>In Canadian media:</strong></p><p><a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/09/12/bell-astral-merger-jobs_n_1878494.html">Media union speaks out against Bell-Astral deal</a></p><p>One of the largest media unions in Canada, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, told the CRTC on Wednesday that it was opposing Bell’s proposed acquisition of Astral Media. The deal would have a negative effect on media workers, the union said. They are but one group speaking on the deal at CRTC hearings that have been taking place all week in Montreal.</p>
