Student newspapers launch alternative newswire to Canadian University Press

<p><strong>By Laurent Bastien Corbeil</strong></p><p>Several student newspapers have left the non-profit co-operative Canadian University Press to cut costs and started an alternative called the National University Wire.</p><p>The University of British Columbia’s <em>Ubyssey</em> was the most recent departure earlier this month, and some of CUP’s oldest members—<em>The McGill Daily, </em>the <em>Dalhousie Gazette, </em>the <em>Varsity</em> and the <em>Manitoban</em>—have left the cooperative in recent years.</p>

Ontario Ministry of Attorney General reviewing media access to criminal courts

<p>A <a href="http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2013/09/17/ontario_reviewing_access_to_criminal_court_records.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Toronto Star</em> investigation</a> has found Ontario courts are increasingly denying access to criminal records that legal experts say should be accessible to the media. Now, the Ministry of the Attorney General is reviewing its policies on media access to criminal court records in a bid to make the province’s justice system more open and transparent.</p>

Innovation: Winnipeg Free Press uses augmented reality app to bring multimedia to the print edition

Readers can scan the newspaper with the free app Blippar to link to digital content such as videos and photo slideshows—and even the answers to crossword puzzles—on their mobile devices.</p>

Trespass charge against Star reporter dropped

<p><strong>By Grant Buckler</strong></p><p>Trespassing charges against Alex Consiglio, the<em> Toronto Star</em> reporter arrested in June after photographing a scuffle on a platform at Toronto Union Station, have been dropped, the <em>Star</em> <a href="http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/09/13/trespass_charge_dropped_against_star_reporter_who_photographed_news_event_at_union_station.html#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> Friday.</p>
