Chris Benjamin and Paul Webster win 2013 Dave Greber Freelance Writers Awards

<p>Halifax writer Chris Benjamin and Toronto writer Paul Webster won the 2013 <a href="http://www.greberwritingaward.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dave Greber Freelance Writers Awards</a>, as announced on Oct. 20.</p><p>Benjamin won the $5,000 Dave Greber Freelance Writers Book Award. The winning chapter, titled “Creation Story,” is from his forthcoming book <em>The Shubenacadie Indian Residential School.</em></p>

Applications open for 2014 Canadian Hillman Prize

<p>The Sidney Hillman Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2014 Canadian Hillman Prize honouring excellence in journalism in service of the common good. The Hillman Prize seeks out the best investigative reporting that draws attention to social or economic injustice and hopefully leads to corrective measures. 2013 Joseph Howe Symposium features top investigative journalists

<p>Traditional investigative journalism has been under assault in North America. Sweeping cutbacks in newsroom budgets, the resulting layoffs and a shift to a 24-hour news cycle have made it harder to pay for the kind of in-depth work that is needed in a healthy democracy.</p><p>New ways of paying for and doing investigative work have tried to fill the gap.
