Shaw Communications posts modest gains in Q2

<p> </p><p>Shaw Communications reported a modest increase of two per cent in second-quarter profit released Friday.</p><p>“Our second quarter financial results were solid reflecting the underlying strength across our businesses as we focus on sustainable and profitable growth,” said CEO Brad Shaw in a <a href="http://www.shaw.ca/uploadedFiles/Corporate/Media/Press_Releases/2ndQtr2013.pdf">press release</a>.</p>

Global News bringing more local news to Halifax, New Brunswick

<p><strong>By Tamara Baluja</strong></p><p>Global News is adding two 30-minute local newscasts for Halifax and New Brunswick audiences starting Monday April 15.</p><p>The one-hour Global Maritimes News Final show will be replaced by local programming from Global Halifax and Global News Brunswick stations and will feature hyperlocal weather and news tailored to each province.</p>

Michelle Lang Fellowship now accepting applications

<p>The <a href="http://www.calgaryherald.com/michelle-lang-fellowship/fellowship.html">Michelle Lang Fellowship</a> is now accepting applications for a position starting in September 2013.</p><p>The recipient will spend six months working with Postmedia News in Ottawa followed by another six months at the <em>Calgary Herald</em>, and will have the opportunity to work on a special in-depth project.</p><p>The 2013 fellow will receive a salary of approximately $40,000.</p>

Quand Médium Large est forcée d’émettre un correctif

Corus reports drop in Q2 earnings; Astral shows profit

<p> </p><p><strong>By Tamara Baluja</strong></p><p>Corus Entertainment, which owns news talk stations like CKNW and AM640, showed an 11 per cent decrease in revenue. Revenue totalled $183.7 million, down from $205.7 million, with both its television and radio revenues <a href="http://files.corusent.com/finances/quarterlycall/2013/q2/documents/tacdkxm/ed09dhsow_13q2shareholderreport.pdf">showing declines</a>.</p><p>The company reported radio revenues fell by 5 per cent in the second quarter from the prior year.</p>

Postmedia revenue dips 10 per cent

<p><strong>By Tamara Baluja</strong></p><p>Revenue dropped 10 per cent with Postmedia Network showing a $14.2-million net loss in the <a href="http://www.postmedia.com/investors/financial-reports/">second quarter</a>. The deepened losses were primarily due to a decrease in print advertising revenue, which has been shrinking faster than online advertising has been able to make up for.</p>
