Opinion: Why the Globe might not want to target an elite audience

<p><strong>By Ira Basen, Future of News editor</strong></p><p>George Brown, who founded<em> The</em> <em>Globe and Mail </em>newspaper in 1844, was no friend of the masses. </p><p>He was distrustful of American-style direct democracy and deeply hostile to unions. When printers went on strike against his newspaper in 1872 in support of a nine-hour day, Brown was outraged. “It is utterly ridiculous to talk of the rapacity and despotism of the employer,” he fumed. “The tyranny of the employed over his master would be an infinitely truer version of the case.”</p>

Selon lui, si les chaines peuvent être de mauvaise foi, c’est aussi aux communautés de faire l’effort d’imposer leur voix.</strong></p>

Drew Nelles joins The Walrus as senior editor

<p>Former <em>Maisonneuve</em> editor-in-chief Drew Nelles will join <em>The Walrus</em> as its senior editor in November.</p><p>Nelles tweeted that he was moving to Toronto to join the <em>The Walrus</em>, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last month. He initially planned to move to New York City following his resignation last month from <em>Maisonneuve</em> after three years at the helm of the award-winning magazine.</p>

Updated: Ontario Press Council rules Star, Globe Rob Ford stories ethical

<p>The Ontario Press Council dismissed complaints about the <em>Toronto Star</em> and <em>The Globe and Mail</em>’s stories on Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and his family, saying the two newspapers reported in a fair and ethical manner.</p>
