UPDATED: CAJ finalists announced

<p>CAJ has announced the finalists for its annual awards commemorating outstanding journalism in 2012.</p><p>The winners will be announced on May 4 at the CAJ Awards gala and conference banquet in Ottawa. The winning entry in most categories will receive a $500 cash prize. Jack Webster Foundation names 2013 fellows

<p>The <a href="http://www.jackwebster.com/">Jack Webster Foundation</a> announced more than $14,000 in funding for its 2013 fellowships. The foundation offers B.C.-based journalist access to professional development opportunities.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.jackwebster.com/fellowships/recipients.php">fellowships</a> were awarded to Charelle Evelyn, reporter at the <em>Prince George Citizen</em>, Claudia Lau, reporter at Fairchild TV, Elaine O'Connor, reporter at <em>The Province</em> and Kelly Sinoski, reporter at the <em>Vancouver Sun. </em></p>

Yukon News wins five Community Newspaper Awards; Ubyssey leads in campus paper categories

<p><em>The Yukon News </em>won five first-place awards in its circulation category at the 2013 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards, while <em>Ubyssey</em>, the UBC student publication, swept all four first-place awards in the campus newspaper division. </p>

Winners announced for Asia Pacific Foundation media fellowships

<p>The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada announced its 2013-2014 <a href="http://www.asiapacific.ca/media/press-releases/38848">media fellowships</a> on Thursday. Canadian Press reporter Mike Blanchfield wins James Travers Fellowship

Ottawa Citizen, Postmedia News awarded Canadian Hillman Prize for robocalls investigation

<p><em>Ottawa Citizen</em>’s Glen McGregor and Postmedia News’ Stephen Maher have won the 2013 Canadian Hillman Prize for their <a href="http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/02/22/racknine-inc-fraudulent-election-calls-traced/">investigative reporting</a> on the use of robocalls to disrupt and suppress voting during the 2011 federal election.</p>

Hamilton Spectator leads ONA nominations

Globe and Mail leads nominations in the National Newspaper Awards

<p><em>The Globe and Mail</em> leads all newspapers in Canada with 15 nominations in the National Newspaper Awards competition, followed by 12 for <em>La Presse</em> with 12 and the <em>Toronto Star</em> with nine.</p><p>The 72 finalists from all categories were announced Wednesday in Toronto from a pool of 1,430 entries for work published in 2012.</p><p>The winners for all 22 categories will be announced at an awards ceremony in Ottawa at the Canadian War Museum on May 3. Winners will receive cheques for $1,000 and a certificate of award. Runners-up receive citations of merit.</p>

Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom accepting award applications

<p> </p><p><a href="http://www.ccwpf-cclpm.ca/english">The Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom</a> is accepting nominations for a journalist who made a significant contribution to promoting free speech.</p><p>The $2,000 award is to acknowledge those contributions of journalists or media workers in Canadian print or electronic media during the past 15 months.</p><p>The winner will receive a certificate from the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and will be announced at the annual World Press Freedom Day Luncheon in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre on May 30.</p>
