After his comments on a Fox News talk show against the Canadian mission in Afghanistan caused an unexpected backlash, Greg Gutfeld has issued an apology, as reported by CP and CTV.ca. The Globe and Mail rounds up feedback from fellow comedians and other Canadians reacting to both the comments and the apology.
Gutfeld, the host of the controversial segment on Fox’s Red Eye show, said he never intended to make light of Canadian military efforts in Afghanistan.
“It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize.
“Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humorous and ridiculous manner.”
At a Canadian Journalism Foundation event, Canadian army commander Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie — who was the butt of one of Gutfeld’s jokes — responded to the attack:
“In regards to personal comments against me, if our young men and women are willing to fight for their country, I’m willing to get slandered for them.”
