CJF Black Journalism Fellowship Final Report

Over the past six months, thanks to the CJF fellowship program, I’ve had the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of journalists, propelling my own abilities in the process.

Coming into the program, I had the sole aim of making a difference – however small. To me, journalism has always meant wielding the power of the pen to protect my neighbours. I yearned for an opportunity to write at least one story that had a meaningful impact on someone’s life. Though I began my journey on the breaking news desk, where I acquired some foundational reporting skills, I ended my placement with the Star’s housing team – an experience that allowed me to realize that goal. The stories I worked on gave me a real-time glimpse of the effects journalism can have on the people around me–like the recent report on the landlord at 500 Dawes Road which contributed to Mayor Olivia Chow’s subsequent announcement of plans for remedial action during council’s recent Executive Committee meeting.

Having been granted an opportunity to extend my stay at one of the most respected publications, I can attest that this program can make a difference in the lives of many young reporters across the country.

I’m looking forward to continuing my work with the Star, with hopes that my time here will encourage future decisions to invest in more individuals who look like me.
