CJF Black Journalism Fellowship Final Report
In September 2025, I moved from Montréal to Toronto. As a French speaker, I had to adapt to a new environment, navigate my way through Canada’s largest city and start a new role in an English-speaking workplace.
Thanks to the Investigative Journalism Bureau (IJB), my experience has been wonderful. I had the great privilege of working in an accountability-driven newsroom with award-winning reporters who taught me how to investigate public affairs and keep stakeholders accountable.
When I joined, my primary objectives were to learn how to conduct an investigation and to produce a national story. Gladly, my objectives were fulfilled. I learned about the intricate nature of investigative reporting: how to analyze large databases, conduct background checks, perform deep research, fact-check, collect documentation and approach and interview sources.
Over the last six months, I have been deeply involved in a women’s health project, led by Wendy-Ann Clarke, an award-winning reporter and past CJF fellow. Together, we researched and examined the Canadian fertility industry for months. I spoke to dozens of women across the country to gain greater insight into their experiences, met with industry experts who provided a critical overview of assisted reproductive technologies and helped lay the groundwork for the investigation.
In addition, I published two news stories, produced IJB’s weekly newsletter and provided endless support across various projects.
I’m honoured to have been part of a unique newsroom that gave me the space to grow and thrive at a slower pace. I’m immensely grateful for the opportunity to explore a branch of journalism I hadn’t tried before as an early-career journalist.
I would like to express my gratitude to IJB and CJF for selecting me as the 2025 Black Investigative Journalism Fellow.
