CJF-CP News Creator Fellowships Final Report
The CJF-CP News Creator Fellowship was an incredible opportunity. The mentorship I received from the Canadian Press, YouTube Canada, and the Google News Lab workshops helped me develop key skills that I will need for a career in journalism. I learned effective research techniques, how to pitch story ideas, conduct interviews, and produce video news stories tailored for a Canadian audience.
Attending morning newsroom meetings and planning daily pitches improved my ability to identify newsworthy stories and provided valuable insight into the operations of a newsroom. The guidance and feedback from our two Canadian Press editors enhanced my video editing skills and my ability to create actionable pitches, pivot, edit, and develop compelling stories for a rapidly changing media landscape. Their insights, experiences, and feedback were invaluable; I hope future fellows can work with editors like them. With their help, we were all able to pursue and achieve video stories that were featured on the Canadian Press’s YouTube Shorts channel. The opportunity to work with the Canadian Press and have my work published through this fellowship marks a significant milestone in my career as I transition from a student to a journalist.
