CJF Black Journalism Fellowship Final Report
During my fellowship, I had the pleasure of spending six months at Canada’s public broadcaster, CBC. This fellowship allotted me the time and resources to develop meaningful connections in the industry and walk through doors that would have taken me way longer to get into, had it not been for this opportunity. During this incredible experience, I had the chance to strengthen my news sense and journalistic instincts while working alongside some of the strongest talents in the industry. My interest in podcasting led me to spend my first six weeks at Front Burner where I learned how the team assembles well-informed and thoughtful daily episodes for a national audience.
I tried something new and outside of my scope of initial interests by joining the Marketplace team where I assisted in shoots and investigative work. During my third placement, I spent six weeks with The Current, CBC’s flagship radio program where I grew the most as a producer. During my time with them, I got to see ideas I pitched and produced go to air, most notably, my pieces about men on steroids and migrant caregivers in Canada. Lastly, I had the absolute pleasure of working on both Q with Tom Power and Commotion with Elamin Abelmahmoud, where I strengthened my passion for pop culture and entertainment reporting, producing several segments for them as well as working alongside their incredible producers and hosts.
I am filled with gratitude for all of the mentors and Black journalists, producers, and hosts I met at the CBC who helped show me the way. These past six months most certainly exposed me to different mediums of storytelling, helped me develop my skills in interviewing and scriptwriting, and primed me to be a better journalist for my community going forward.
