While many altered videos are meant to be funny and harmless, the potential for politically-driven deepfakes to spread disinformation and manipulate citizens is great. Already, we’ve seen darker forces at work, as deepfakes enmesh public figures in political scandals and cause others to become victims of cybercrime. How can we prepare for this threat? Are there tech tools to help us do so?
