CJF Black Journalism Fellowship Final Report

Last spring, I received the exciting news that I had been selected as a recipient of the 2024 CJF-CTV Black Journalism Fellowship. At the time, I had no idea just how transformative this experience would be for my career. The fellowship gave me the chance to fully immerse myself in the world of broadcast journalism at one of Canada’s top newsrooms. I had the privilege of learning directly from seasoned journalists who welcomed me onto their teams, mentoring me and generously sharing their knowledge—from producing and reporting to investigating and chasing stories.

 

I spent time in the field with CTV News Toronto reporters, where I crafted my own stories and reports from the field and learned how to write for the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts, along with investigative techniques like geomapping. My time at CTV News Channel and The National sharpened my skills in chasing leads, writing anchor scripts, and using data journalism tools—skills that I will carry with me throughout my career.

 

I’m deeply grateful to every person who took the time to mentor and support me during this journey. But I’m especially thankful for the CP24 Breakfast team, who welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like one of their own. Some of my favourite on-air stories came from my time with them, and I truly had a blast working alongside such an inspiring team. It’s rare to find a job that doesn’t feel like work, but waking up before sunrise to do what I love with people I admire—that’s been the highlight of this entire experience.
