Walter Cronkite dead

Walter Cronkite is dead at 92, reported the New York Times. As anchor of CBS Evening News for nearly 20 years, Cronkite was an icon in American television journalism who, said the Times, “figuratively held the hand of the American public during the civil rights movement, the space race, the Vietnam war, and the impeachment of Richard Nixon.”

A post by Al Tompkins at Poynter Online, “What Walter Cronkite Did for Journalism,” examines the legacy of Cronkite, who was ranked in a 1973 poll as “the most trusted man in America.”

Canadian news anchors Peter Mansbridge and Lloyd Robertson remember Cronkite in this CBC article. Kevin Newman writes about him here.
