Today is National Freelancers Day in the U.K., and journalism.co.uk has compiled a list of 10 things every freelance journalist should know. Aside from some tips specific to U.K. finance and law, the tips are largely applicable to any freelancer.
Today is National Freelancers Day in the U.K., and journalism.co.uk has compiled a list of 10 things every freelance journalist should know. Aside from some tips specific to U.K. finance and law, the tips are largely applicable to any freelancer.
They suggest pitching to editors via email as opposed to by phone, as it gives them time to check their budget and get back to you. They also recommend invoicing soon after submitting and not being afraid to follow up – after all, you did the work and are entitled to the money. As well, they suggest thinking in terms of story packages: Combining words with visuals will make a busy editor’s life easier, and could land you work in the future.
National Freelance Day aims to recognize the influence of the U.K.’s freelance community and its growing contribution to the economy. The day was launched in 2009 by PCG, a non-profit association that represents U.K. freelancers, contractors and consultants.
