In a recent memo to employees, Toronto Star editor Michael Cooke announced Colin MacKenzie will join rejoin the Star team as foreign editor at the end of October.
The Star‘s current foreign editor, Jennifer Hunter, wanted to return to writing and will remain at the Star full-time as a feature writer, Star managing editor Joe Hall told J-Source in an email.
MacKenzie was national editor of the Star from 1998-2002. He’s also held positions with the Ottawa Citizen, Maclean’s and The Globe and Mail. Most recently he was associate editor at the Globe.
Set to be back at the Star by the end of October, MacKenzie will “direct the Star’s foreign coverage both online and in the newspapers.”
In addition, former Star executive editor Phil Bingley is returning to the paper as assistant managing editor. He will “take overall responsibility for the direction of [the Star‘s] sports coverage and other projects” as the Olympics approach, but current sports editor, Mike Simpson, will remain in his position.
