The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) will launch a Canadian chapter on Sept. 30.

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) will launch a Canadian chapter on Sept. 30.

SABEW is a 50-year-old organization with approximately 3,000 business journalist members. It has hosted an annual event in Canada since 2010, but its Canadian members haven now decided to launch a SABEW Canada division officially. The Canadian chapter will receive financial and administrative support from its parent organization but will be run by a committee of its Canadian members. Members will get access to a number of Canadian-specific events and training programs and networking opportunities throughout the year as well as access to SABEW America’s two annual conferences—this year in New York City and Chicago.

The official launch on Sept. 30 includes a talk with John McCorry, Bloomberg's executive editor for the Americas, who will talk about the state of business journalism since the financial crisis and what Canadian journalists can learn from the struggles and successes of Bloomberg and the rest of the U.S. media industry. 

SABEW Canada is also developing a Best in Business Contest to celebrate excellence in business journalism.
